Heroic Pit Bull Inspires One Town To Lift Its Breed Ban

One Pit Bull’s heroic actions inspired a change of heart in a town that had banned Pit Bulls.

Back in March 2015, Jamie Kraczkowski was being attacked by her drunk ex-boyfriend when her Pit Bull, Isis, leaped to her defense and scared him away.

“Finally, when my head got hit against the wall [by my boyfriend], [Isis] just grabbed his pant leg and she was done. She was done with him abusing me – and abusing her,” said Kraczkowski about the incident.

The man was arrested and charged with domestic violence and told police that Isis had attacked and bit him.

Hazel Park police told Kraczkowski considering her situation, Isis would not be euthanized. But there was, unfortunately, a piece of bad news that went along with the good. Pit Bulls were banned within the city limits of Hazel Park since 2013, so Kraczkowski was given five days to find another place for Isis to live.

“Thank God they’re allowing me to do home quarantine now. But, you know, it’s been pretty traumatizing for me. I don’t know what’s going to happen with my dog. I definitely don’t feel safe without her,” she told WJBK News at the time.

The city officials were sympathetic to her situation and extended the deadline for her, in order to give her time to relocate, but they continued to support their Breed Specific Legislation.

City Manager Edward Klobucher explained that the ban originally went into effect because they couldn’t “ban stupid owners” and they were looking “to try to address what was a serious public health situation when we had 40-something bites by Pit Bulls in the past few years.”

While Michigan’s Political Action Committee for Animals worked on convincing city official to repeal the Pit Bull ban, Kraczkowski moved away with Isis. Luckily, she had received an outpouring of support and was able to raise enough money to move out of Hazel Park, as she did not want to take any chances with Isis.

In the months that followed, animal advocates and the city worked together to review the town’s legislation and meetings went better than expected.

Isis’ story eventually did inspire positive change. Local officials to have a change of heart and lifted the Pit Bull ban in favor of a breed-neutral dog safety ordinance.

Residents in the city will once again be to keep their Pit Bulls as long as they keep them licensed, up-to-date with shots, have the dogs spayed/neutered, keep them inside of fenced yards, and maintain homeowner’s or renter’s insurance.

It’s a step forward, given what the alternative for Pit Bull owners was just a few months earlier and that’s all thanks to one brave Pit Bull taking a stand to help her family.
