Woman Captures Dramatic Moment Group Of Elephants Nearly Drown Crossing River

A small group of elephants were attempting to cross the rough waters of the Sabie River, when they ran into a bit of trouble. Wildlife photographer Marijke Arends Meiring captured this dramatic footage from the Kruger National Park in South Africa. The elephants were trying to cross the river when they become almost completely submerged.

Marijke started to panic and thought they were drowning. Luckily, in the middle of the river was a small island where the elephants could stand and complete the rest of the crossing with ease. A second group decided to make the crossing with a few calves and it was equally nerve-wracking to witness. Thankfully, the group made it across too.

After seeing what happened to their friends, the remaining elephants on the opposite side of the river were too nervous to make the journey and trumpeted their concern to the group.
