Elephant Saves Gazelle from Drowning — Just Like She Did Once Before
Francisco David was visiting La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City with his daughters and children from their school when they witnessed an extraordinary moment of compassion — a heroic elephant leaping into action to save a drowning gazelle.
The gazelle had become stuck in the pond within the enclosure and was struggling to get out when Trompita, a 64-year-old Asian elephant, noticed what was happening.
She let out a loud trumpet in alarm, rushed over to the pond, and used her trunk to pull the gazelle out by its horns. The crowd erupted in cheers as Trompita successfully brought the gazelle to dry land.
Onlookers were even more touched when the elephant appeared to check on the gazelle after the rescue, gently following and lightly touching it with her trunk.

This isn’t the first time Trompita has come to the aid of a gazelle at the zoo. In 2022, she spotted an antelope stuck in the same pond and sounded the alarm, alerting a nearby caretaker who ultimately rescued the animal.
David wrote about what they witnessed on TikTok in the video he shared:
“Today, to celebrate Father’s Day, we visited the Zoo with our daughters and sons from Colegio Belga. It was a wonderful experience, full of learning and connecting with nature. The little ones were excited to see so many animals, but the most powerful moment was when they witnessed the zoo’s elephant save a baby gazelle from drowning. An incredible act that reminded us how magical nature can be!”
The elephant makes sure to look after her gazelles, tending to the food and keeping out a watchful eye like the true matriarch she is.
