Divers Free Whale Shark From Fishing Rope Noose

Divers noticed a commercial fishing rope was strung around a whale shark and cutting into its skin. The rope had been wrapped around the gentle giant possibly for years.

Professional divers from Macana Maldives tour agency, Simone Musumeci and Antonio Di Franca, were out with some clients on a guided dive in the island of Fuvahmulah, Maldives, when they saw the troubled shark. The rope was covered in algae and cutting into the flesh of her pectoral fins.

The divers undertook to free the giant marine fish from her chains. They sawed away at the rope with knives while the large fish swam – a dangerous undertaking for any diver. But the pair of divers persisted and eventually cut through the heavy rope and freed the whale shark from her deadly burden.
