Cross-Eyed Dog Who Could Not Find A Home Celebrates His Adoption Anniversary

A cross-eyed collie who could not find a home celebrated his first year of being adopted with his family.

Dennis was surrendered to the Dogs Trust charity in England by his previous owners who said they could no longer care for him. The rescuers were immediately struck by Dennis’ appearance. His eyes are crossed because he suffers from strabismus, a condition that causes one of his eyeballs to be stuck in an abnormal position but does not affect his vision.

Concerned that Dennis might be overlooked by potential adopters because of his appearance, the Dogs Trust Kenilworth launched a media campaign in November 2014 about Dennis to help raise his profile and help find him a forever home.

In his listing they noted:

“He may just be a little slower at playing catch but this certainly doesn’t stop him trying. Dennis is a fun loving fetch fanatic who would love a new best friend to play plenty of games.”

At the time, Dogs Trust Kenilworth’s, Jane Hirons, describes Dennis as unique. “We take in hundreds of dogs of all shapes and sizes but I have never seen anything quite like Dennis. He is such a cheeky character. He is an affectionate, fun loving boy who adores his carers and loves to be with other dogs. This energetic boy is looking for an active family, could live with children as young as six and must be rehomed with another dog.”

The appeal touched the hearts of Liz Parkes and her partner Nathan Bates, who ended up adopting Dennis. They said that Dennis has settled in nicely and gets along really well with their other dog, Milo.

For his “adoption day” celebration, Dennis got a special cake with the “one” made from dog biscuits. Parkes said of her dog, “Dennis has settled in really well and we absolutely adore him, he is the best of friends with our dog Milo and definitely one of the family – we already can’t imagine life without him. He seemed like a real character when we first met him at Dogs Trust and he has certainly lived up to this.”

“His slightly comedic cross-eyed looks really suit his cheeky personality – there is never a dull moment when Dennis is about, he is always up to mischief and we absolutely wouldn’t have him any other way!”
