Skeletal Dog Too Weak To Walk Refuses To Stop Wagging His Tail When He Meets His Rescuers

A skeletal Boxer dog did not have the energy to walk when he arrived at New York City Animal Care Center, but he was still wagging his nubby tail. The dog weighed only 25 pounds, according to authorities, instead of the 60 pounds a dog of his age should weigh, and rescuers sprung into action to save the dog’s life.

The young man dropped him off, claiming he had found the dog in a park. However, an investigation would later reveal that the man was, in fact, the dog’s owner.

Twenty-five-year-old Anthony Esteves allegedly pretended he was an animal rescuer, telling the animal shelter that he had found the severely emaciated Boxer in a field. However, authorities said in a statement in October 2015 that the owner had admitted that he brought the dog to the shelter because he did not want the dog to die in his bedroom.

Esteves has since been charged with aggravated animal cruelty. District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a press release, “The defendant is accused of showing a complete disregard for the well being of this helpless animal when he failed to provide the basic necessities required to maintain the animal’s health.”

Adopt a Boxer Rescue came and took Brewster within 30 minutes of being contacted by the shelter. They rushed him to the vet and are providing Brewster’s medical care and foster care while the case goes before the courts. They later thanked investigators for resolving Brewster’s case.

“Huge thanks to the NYPD for jumping on this so quickly and being so passionate!” they wrote on Facebook.

Four days after being treated, Brewster was well enough to go to his foster home with Dr. Amy Swift, where he is loving spending time with her family and playing with Benjamin the dog.

Brewster’s rescuers say he has a loving and friendly temperament. Although he’s gained 6 pounds since his rescue, it will take some time for him to reach a healthy weight. Here is a video of him playing with his foster family.

Brewster’s first month of rehabilitation has come and gone and on November 20, 2015 the rescue shared an update on Brewster’s progress.

“This boy has so much spunk and life in him he is a different dog than we picked up a month ago,” they write.

They also shared a video of Brewster who is a “little jumping bean” in the video, a huge contrast from his early videos. It’s incredible how far he’s come already.

Adopt a Boxer expected to receive many applications to adopt him and wrote, “We anticipate receiving many, many applications.” It didn’t take too long for the rescue to find Brewster the perfect family in Florida!

He is healthy, happy and loves his new family!
