After Over 10 Years Blind, Cockatoo Sees His Rescuer Again For The Very First Time

Boo’s world just got a whole lot brighter.

A 40-year-old umbrella cockatoo who has been blind for more than half his life had a heartwarming reaction when he recognized his first rescuer. Boo recently underwent eye surgery that reversed his blindness.

Just over a week after the procedure, Boo was reunited with his first rescuer, Nedra—and saw her face for the very first time. Birds In The Dog House shared the touching moment in a video, writing, “Nedra came to visit a little over a week after the surgery was completed and this was Boo’s reaction when he saw her face for the first time in over a decade. Priceless!”

40 year-old Boo has been blind for over 10 years from severe cataracts. His previous owner, Nedra, didn’t know that surgical options were available. His new owners took him to NC State where the surgical team was able to perform life-changing surgery to restore his vision. Nedra came to visit a little over a week after the surgery was completed and this was Boo”s reaction when he saw her face for the first time in over a decade. Priceless! #boo #HealingTakesFlight #FeatheredFamily #AvianWarrior #VetHeroes #BirdsInTheDogHouse #ThankYouFromBoo #BooStrong #cataractsurgery #vision

Boo was rescued during a police raid 20 years ago and was initially deemed unadoptable. He had severe cataracts that eventually left him completely blind. Nedra rescued him, took him in and lovingly cared for him for many years. However, due to Boo’s long-term medical issues and the bird being bullied by another bird in her home, she reached out to Birds In The Dog House a few months ago.

Amy, who runs the rescue, stepped in and discovered that Boo’s vision problems were reversible. Thanks to generous supporters, she was able to raise the funds for Boo to undergo eye surgery.

Before Nedra’s visit, the rescue shared a touching video of Boo just after his procedure. In the clip, Boo is seen disoriented and unable to see, but still reaching out for comfort. The caption reads: “Fresh out of surgery, disoriented and blind, he reached for the one thing he knew—love. You’ll hear it in his tiny voice. You’ll feel it in this moment. This is more than recovery. This is connection. This is trust. This is Boo.”

@birdsinthedoghouse Three days ago, Boo made it through one of the hardest moments of his life. Fresh out of surgery, disoriented and blind, he reached for the one thing he knew—love. You’ll hear it in his tiny voice. You’ll feel it in this moment. This is more than recovery. This is connection. This is trust. This is Boo. Thank you to our incredible veterinary team for their compassion and care, and to you—our flock family—for every prayer, message, and moment of support. We couldn’t have done this without you. Let’s show the world what love looks like when it has wings. #BooStrong #ThankYouFromBoo #BirdsInTheDogHouse #VetHeroes #AvianWarrior #FeatheredFamily #HealingTakesFlight #ViralWithHeart ♬ original sound – Birds in the Dog House

Here’s a shorter clip of Boo seeing Nedra, but without the music.

Someone asked how Boo has been spending his time now that his vision has been restored and Birds In The Dog House obliged by sharing a video of him out for a walk. The rescue wrote, “Tonight, he took a stroll and marvelled at everything he saw. Next up, we will work on muscle mass in hopes that he will fly again one day. No matter what, this 40 year-old is loving life!”

@birdsinthedoghouse It will be 2 weeks tomorrow that the vets at NC Exotics were able to perform Boo''s life-changing cataract surgery to restore his vision. He has a lot of time to make up from missing out on things in the last 10 years. Tonight, he took a stroll and marvelled at everything he saw. Next up, we will work on muscle mass in hopes that he will fly again one day. No matter what, this 40 year-old is loving life! We just hope he doesn't hit his mid life crisis and demand an upgrade from the stroller to a sports car! #vision #cataractsurgery #BooStrong #ThankYouFromBoo #BirdsInTheDogHouse #VetHeroes #AvianWarrior #FeatheredFamily #HealingTakesFlight #boo #ViralWithHeart #bird #birds #birdsoftiktok #parrot #animals #animalsoftiktok #animal #pet ♬ Wander On – Jeddy Knox

Amy expressed her gratitude to the many supporters who made the surgery possible, calling it life-changing for Boo—and for the next 40 plus years of love and life he still has ahead. Thanks to their support, Boo’s world just got a whole lot brighter.
