Woman’s Sidewalk Hopscotch Delights Neighbors During Mardi Gras

Sometimes, a small change in your surroundings can bring unexpected joy. One woman in New Orleans had a simple yet brilliant idea to brighten up her neighborhood during the recent Mardi Gras Carnival celebrations. Lu (Tiktokker @louannkristy) drew a hopscotch board on the sidewalk in front of her house and recorded what happened over the next few days.

It didn’t take long for pedestrians to start hopping, skipping, dancing, and even wiggling their way across.

Part 1 of 4: Pavement Hopscotch—J’Ouvert Style! Imagine the classic childhood game infused with the spirit of Trinidad & Tobago’s most beloved pre-dawn Carnival tradition—J’ouvert. For those who don’t know, J’ouvert (pronounced “joo-vay”) is the wild, uninhibited start to Carnival, held before dawn. Rooted in history and rebellion, it’s a celebration of freedom where revelers dance through the streets, covered in paint, mud, oil, cocoa and powder, moving to the rhythms of soca music. #Jouvert #CarnivalVibes #PavementHopscotch #trinidadcarnival #wholesome #pavementhopscotch #hopscotchtrinidad #hopscotch

With just a bit of chalk, she spread joy—not only to those who joined in but also to those who watched the viral videos of the playful moment.

It’s so fun to see all the people participate. The Fun Theory Project had a similar idea when they wanted to encourage people to use the stairs. They transformed them into a musical keyboard!
