12-Year-Old Dog in Wheelchair Wins Hearts Racing in ‘Corgi Cup’
A happy-go-lucky Corgi in a wheelchair didn’t win the first-ever Corgi Cup dog race she entered — but she did win everyone’s hearts.
Abbey, a 12-year-old Pembrokeshire Corgi, recently competed in the inaugural Corgi Cup at the Saratoga Race Course, hosted by the New York Racing Association (NYRA).
The event featured 48 Corgis racing in four heats, each sprinting 40 yards to the finish line. Abbey quickly became a fan favorite.

According to her mom, Leslie DiCarlo, Abbey has neuropathy in her right back leg and has been using a wheelchair since March.
“She can’t feel it (the leg), so she’s not in pain and she can use her legs when she’s in her cart to push, but she just can’t feel it to stand,” DiCarlo told The Saratogian. “She’s almost 13 now, and it’s getting worse, but the cart has gotten us to be able to go out for walks, and she still comes to work with me every day, so it’s really nice.”
DiCarlo wasn’t sure if racing would stress Abbey out, but she took it in stride and seemed to enjoy herself. Ultimately, a 6-year-old Corgi named Sam won first place.

NYRA said more than 100 Corgi owners applied to take part in the Corgi Cup, but the field was narrowed to 48 competitors.
