Parrot Had a Severely Overgrown Beak — Now She Can’t Get Enough Snuggles
When Winnie the parrot’s owner passed away in her 80s she wasn’t properly cared for and arrived at Mulberry Acres Rescue, a parrot rescue and sanctuary, with a severely overgrown beak. The elderly woman’s family had taken Winnie in, but had not known how to take care of the bird, feeding her Burger King instead of food appropriate for a parrot.
Mandy runs Mulberry Acres Rescue in SE Michigan and takes care of over 60 rescued birds; she immediately trimmed Winnie’s beak so the bird could eat properly and be in less discomfort. Winnie was withdrawn when she first arrived, but within two days she was crawling on Mandy’s lap asking for snuggles.

A parrot’s beak has a lot of nerves like dogs; nails, so Mandy only partially trimmed it initially, because the process is quite stressful to parrots. She did a second trim two weeks later, and then a third shaping after that. Now Winnie is much more comfortable and seeks out human attention.
Winnie is almost 30 years old and is “a brave cookie,” always up for new adventures.
