Rescue Dog Once Given a Second Chance is Now a ‘Hero Of Venezuela’

A rescue dog named Bailey and the firefighters who trusted him with their lives have been honored as Heroes of Venezuela.

Bailey, along with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service firefighters Richard Swash, Rob Wingar, and Graham Currie, received “Hero of Venezuela” medals after taking part in a UK search and rescue mission following devastating earthquakes that struck the country.

The team was part of a 68-person UK International Search and Rescue response sent to help search collapsed buildings and look for survivors.

For Bailey and his handlers, the mission meant working in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable—extreme heat, high humidity, and dangerous rubble-filled environments.

“When we got to Venezuela, it was just a chaotic scene,” Richard said. “There were people everywhere, rescue teams from around the world, damaged roads, traffic gridlock and collapsed buildings. It was a concrete disaster zone. I’d never seen anything like it.”

Bailey, a specialist search and rescue dog rescued from the Dogs Trust in 2021, played a vital role in helping locate areas where people could be trapped.

His handler Graham said the determined dog never stopped working, despite the difficult conditions.

“I’ve never seen Bailey work so hard. The temperatures and humidity were incredibly high, but he just kept going. He’s such a good dog. He just does what he’s told but you can see he’s determined and wants to find people.”

But Bailey gave people something more than his incredible search skills. During a devastating time, the gentle rescue dog also became a source of comfort for those affected by the disaster.

“Bailey has got this knack of going over to people and just pushing against them,” Graham said. “He would just go in and collapse against them while they stroked him, and I think people really appreciated that.”

The team said one of their most memorable experiences was the kindness shown by local residents who had lost so much.

“Within hours they’d gone from living their normal lives to having absolutely nothing, yet they were still bringing us fresh water and food,” Rob said. “That was incredibly humbling.”

The Venezuelan people even brought water and ice to help keep Bailey cool while he worked. Before heading home, Bailey and his handlers were presented with their medals in recognition of their efforts. For the firefighters, answering the call was exactly why they chose their profession.

“That’s what we joined for—to make a difference,” Graham said.

And Bailey, a rescue dog who was once given a second chance himself, proved that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.
