Teen Plays It Smart And Ends Up Saving Woman From Being Kidnapped

Seventeen-year-old Malyk Bonnet is being hailed as a hero after he helped save the life of a woman who was abducted by her ex-boyfriend.

CBC News reports that the teen was on his way home from work when he noticed a couple arguing by a bus stop. Concerned that the man was going to hit the woman, Malyk approached them.

The man asked him for money to take the bus to Laval, Quebec and he agreed after he noticed that the woman was terrified. But instead of simply handing over the money, he told the couple he also lived in Laval and would travel with them so that he could keep an eye on the woman.

“My plan was to keep them in a public place, where there’s a lot of people. I decided to make myself friendly with the man, so he would trust me. So I played my game,” Malyk told CBC News.

The teen did not know it at the time but police were already looking for the man, who they believed kidnapped the 29-year-old woman. The man had already been found guilty of assault and death threats against his ex-girlfriend last year and had a court order to stay away from her.

While traveling to Laval, Malyk struck up friendly conversation with the man and waited for the right time to call police. Unfortunately, Malyk’s cell phone had died and he needed to find another way to call authorities without drawing attention to himself.

So, when they arrived at the station he offered to buy a couple a meal. While at the restaurant he excused himself to go to the restroom and borrowed a customer’s cell phone to call police.

The Laval police arrived a few minutes later and arrested the kidnapper who was surprised he was caught. “He was really surprised, he didn’t know that it was me,” said Malyk. “So I played my game right.”

Malyk said the abducted woman didn’t say a word but her expression said everything.

Looking back at what he did, Malyk said at the time he did not realize at the time that what he was doing was heroic. Police look at it differently. “He managed the situation very well and took good decisions that probably saved the life of this woman,” Lt. Daniel GuĂ©rin said.

Impressed by what he did, police took up a collection and reimbursed the money Malyk had spent for bus fare and food that night and intend to nominate him for an award for bravery.

“I mean yo, money ain’t nothing. Food ain’t nothing,” Malyk commented. “For a life? A life is really more important than my money.”

The Montreal teen’s heroism has made him a bit of a celebrity in his home town, where he’s been featured in the newspapers. While he was being interviewed by CBC News, several locals stopped to shake his hand.

Of course one of his biggest fans is his mom. “My mom is so proud of me. She bought like eight Journals. She’s like, ‘I’m going to show them to your kids one day.”
