Good Samaritans Help Save Injured Dog And His Companion Off Busy Highway

Deborah Dominick knew she had to do something to save two dogs when she saw them trying to cross three lanes of traffic on  Highway 71 in Kansas City.  The Good Samaritan managed to save the pair with a little extra help from a police officer who came to her aid!

Dominick pulled over to help the dogs when she saw the black dog get hit by a car right in front of her. “The bumper came off,” she said of the collision. “He hit the dog so hard it pulled his bumper off.” Dominick noted that although the driver stopped to fix his bumper. he did not come to help Dominick.

Help eventually came 30 minutes later when an off-duty detective stopped to assist her, followed by Officer Tom Butkovich, who ended up closing down a lane so the dog could be pulled to safety.

“I couldn’t have continued knowing there was a hurt dog,” he said.

Bear’s companion was standing close by and quickly came to the injured dog’s side. Officer Butkovich kept the Sharpei mix calm with the emergency dog treats he had on hand.

Together, Butkovich and Dominick got the dogs to safety and took them to a local veterinarian, where they ended up splitting the bill between them.

The two dogs were later brought to KC Pet Project after the dogs’ owner said they no longer wanted them.

The two dogs are now up for adoption through KC Pet Project. “Keiko” is currently available and “Tuscaloo” is in foster care and waiting for the mandatory hold period before being made available. And thanks to Dominick and Officer Butkovich, both dogs have a chance at a better life!
