Disabled Boar Locked Away in a Dark Hole for Four Years Surprises Rescuers
For four long years, a boar named Dolma experienced unimaginable cruelty before she was finally rescued and began a new life surrounded by love and kindness.
Dolma had been chased by hunters in Spain, fell down a cliff, and broke her spine—leaving her unable to use her back legs. For reasons unknown, one of the hunters took her and locked her away in a dark, confined space—a small hole—where he kept her alone for years.
Some neighbors heard Dolma crying and tried to convince the hunter to give her up. Eventually, he agreed. Gemma, who works at an animal sanctuary called Fundación El Hogar in Barcelona, was contacted, and Dolma was brought to the rescue, which houses 300 animals.
At first, Dolma was very scared, but she soon surprised her rescuers with her response.

She turned out to be incredibly affectionate and intelligent, and she is now living her best life, putting years of suffering behind her.
Dolma is often visited by Juno the peacock, who jumps over the fence and loves to show off his plumage to her.
“Dolma is very good and lets him do his thing. She’s fine with Juno being in her park,” says the sanctuary on Instagram. “There are no cages here, no hierarchies. Each resident of the sanctuary chooses who they want to spend their time with. At Fundación El Hogar, relationships between animals don’t follow our rules. They follow theirs: freedom, respect, and choice.”
They add, “And if Juno has decided that Dolma is good company… who are we to contradict him?”
