City Proposes To Fine Parents Of Children Who Bully

The Wisconsin city of Shawano is taking an unusual approach in trying to stop bullying in their town. A new ordinance calls for holding a bullying child’s parents accountable and fining the parents if the situation does not improve.

According to WFRV, parents will have 90 days to correct their child’s bullying behavior after they are informed by police or potentially face fines. If the bullying continues, parents could be fined $366 and if there is a second offence within a year, parents could be fined $681.

Police in Shawano are going to work with Shawano School District officials to talk with parents of children who are bullying other children. The ordinance comes a short time after an 18-year-old gunman open fired outside of a Wisconsin high school prom in Antiago in April 2016. Two students were struck by bullets and hurt, and the shooter, who later died at hospital after being shot by police, was said to have been bullied.

The new ordinance is receiving mixed reviews from citizens in Shawno. What do you think of this approach? Do you think this could be effective?
