This is a wonderful story about preparing in advance for a family. It’s also one for the record books. In Australia, a 6-month-old baby has made it into the Guinness World Records, as he was conceived from the world’s oldest sperm. His father Alex Powell had overcome Hodgkin’s lymphoma disease as a teen but was left infertile. So how was it possible that Alex became a father?
When Alex Powell was 15, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma disease and doctors told him he would need to begin chemotherapy right away. This was back in 1993, and the teen wasn’t thinking about the effects the treatment would have on his fertility. But his stepmother was after she had a chance conversation with another mother whose son was negatively affected by radiotherapy. Alex’s mom told him to go to the sperm bank to preserve his sperm just in case. It was an awkward conversation for the mom and teen, but one they are now grateful for.
Flash forward 23 years. Alex and his wife wanted to start a family. The couple decided to try artificial insemination with the nearly 23-year-old frozen sperm. It was successful and they gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Xavier!
