Woman Hears Whimper On Walk—Discovers Dog Needing Rescue

A woman out for her usual neighborhood walk was enjoying a quiet stroll when a sound made her stop and listen. It was faint at first—a whimper, a panicked cry—and she couldn’t tell where it was coming from.

“She stopped in her tracks… There was a dog in trouble,” the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region wrote while sharing the woman’s story.

“She searched nearby yards, checked behind fences, and scanned the sidewalks, yet there was no dog in sight,” the animal shelter shared. “Still, the cries continued, growing more urgent, tugging at her heart. That’s when she realized the noise wasn’t coming from around her. It was coming from below.”

Searching the area she spotted a sewer drain nearby and took a look inside and saw two eyes peering back at her. “At the bottom, in the dim shadows below the street, sat a dog, wide-eyed, trembling, and desperately hoping someone would hear her. Without hesitation, the woman called Animal Law Enforcement for help.”

Corporal Rollins arrived quickly but rescuing the dog wasn’t straightforward. The space was too small for him to safely climb into but he noticed a manhole cover a short distance away. “With determination, he lifted it, revealing the dark tunnel beneath the street,” the animal shelter wrote. “Almost immediately, the dog appeared, cautiously walking toward the light as if she somehow understood that help had finally arrived.”

Rollins called for back up and was soon joined by Officer Moore. Together, they worked to free the frightened pup. Rollins climbed down into the sewer and used treats to gently coax her closer. Speaking softly, he was able to gain her trust, secure a hold, and lift her safely to the surface.

Back at the shelter, staff posted the dog’s photo on their lost pets page and shared it on social media. “As luck would have it, her family had already been searching for her and knew exactly where to look. The moment they spotted her picture, they rushed to the shelter, relieved beyond words to be reunited with their girl. Her name was Kita, and she was heading home the very same day.”

The shelter noted, “Before leaving, Kita’s family made the responsible decision to microchip her, ensuring that if she ever found herself on another unexpected adventure, getting home would be much easier. With that, Kita’s story came to a close, thanks to a sharp-eared neighbor, quick-thinking officers, and a whole lot of teamwork.”
