Small Town Moves Bookstore One Book At A Time In Sweet Show Of Unity

In a heartwarming display of community participation, 300 residents of a small Michigan town came together to assist their cherished local bookstore in a truly unique way — helping the store move by passing each book one by one, hand by hand down a line.

Volunteers formed a human chain (aka “Book Brigade”) to carefully transfer nearly 9000 books from Serendipity Books’ former location to its new spot around the corner. A video of the occasion captures the camaraderie and collective effort with neighbors of all ages joining forces to support a beloved business.

Serendipity Books shared a video of the move that has gone viral on TikTok, writing: “POV: your community shows up 300 strong to help move your ENTIRE BOOKSTORE around the corner to your new location. Today was so beautiful.”

The Chelsea, Michigan bookstore shared a charming Q&A on how the Book Brigade went and why it turned out to be way more efficient than a standard move. They noted that the whole Book Brigade took under 2 hours. With just their four staff members, they simply wouldn’t have been able to pack up that number of books and moved them in such a short amount of time. The brigade also moved the books in alphabetical order and genre sections, making the whole process very efficient.

This touching moment serves as a reminder that when a community unites, daunting tasks, like moving an entire bookstore, become much lighter.
