Stray Kitten Arrives at Shelter Filled With Air Like a Balloon
Meet Zoe — the tiny “puff kitty” who has captured hearts everywhere.
When Zoe arrived at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter in California, staff could hardly believe what they were seeing. The tiny stray kitten looked inflated like a balloon, her little body filled with air.
Veterinarian Dr. Phil Caldwell examined Zoe and said he had only seen the rare condition once before and never in a cat.
He believes trauma to her windpipe caused air to leak into her tissues, essentially filling her body like a tiny balloon. To help her, Dr. Caldwell carefully extracted the trapped air in several places, allowing Zoe to slowly deflate.
Thankfully, the brave little kitten has been doing much better since the procedure. After several days of monitoring, the air does not appear to have returned, and Zoe is gaining weight quickly.
Right now she weighs just two pounds, but once she’s a little stronger she’ll head into foster care. Until then, the veterinary team is watching her closely. As long as she continues showing signs of BAR — Bright, Alert, and Resting — Dr. Caldwell says he’s cautiously optimistic.
Although Zoe is still fragile and her prognosis remains guarded, the tiny fighter has already won over countless supporters online. Fans have lovingly nicknamed her “Puffy Kitty” and “Miss Puff.”
The shelter shared a heartfelt message about the tiny survivor:
“Zoe, our Puff Kitty warrior — a tiny but mighty kitten — has touched the hearts of so many with her story of resilience. From the moment she arrived, you’ve been cheering her on and surrounding her with so much love as she continues to heal.”
