Caged for 50 Years, Rescued Cockatoo Now Hikes with Her New Family

When a family friend of Carrie’s attended an estate sale, they weren’t expecting to find a heartbreaking sight: a Cockatoo named BB, locked alone in a cage, with nearly all her feathers plucked out. She looked like she’d been severely neglected—likely caged her entire life—and was so weak she could barely walk.

BB was around 50 years old and clearly in distress. The friend took her in but soon realized BB was terrified of men and wasn’t adjusting well to the husband in the household. That’s when they reached out to Carrie and asked if she could give BB a more peaceful home.

BB had serious health issues from years of poor nutrition and trauma, one of them being she went blind in one eye. It took nearly six months before she began to trust Carrie—but with time, patience, and love, everything changed.

Now, BB is thriving. She loves being outside, especially going on hikes, and has even started to warm up to Carrie’s boyfriend. Best of all, BB enjoys being surrounded by people. Carrie noted that BB becomes more trusting around a group of three or more people because it reminds her of being in a flock.

It’s been 2 years since BB came into Carrie’s home and she’s come such a far way – from frequently plucking her feathers to barely doing that any more.

She also was so scared when she initially went outside but now she loves her outdoor walks. It’s inspiring to see how far BB’s come.
