Rare Inter-Species Goose Couple Build Nest At Oregon Park

Visitors to Blue Lake Regional Park in Fairview, Oregon, may spot an unusual sight in this Portland metro area park. Park Ranger William McDonald recently observed two geese nesting in the park. While geese nesting isn’t unusual, what makes this pair stand out is that they are two different species—one a Canada Goose, the other a Greater White-Fronted Goose.

Oregon Public Broadcasting wrote in the YouTube description, “The couple built a nest together and laid six eggs. While two of the eggs hatched, no goslings have been seen. Biologists say it is unusual but not unheard of in nature for two different species of geese to form a blended family.”

It seems that these two geese overcame their differences to form a rare pairing. The two geese from different species make an unusual couple. If the couple’s eggs hatch successfully (which biologists say is possible), visitors may one day spot some truly unique hybrid geese offspring in the park.
