Moving Crew Help Save 3-Year-Old Girl Abducted From Her Home
A 3-year-old girl is safely home with her family after being abducted by a stranger thanks in large part to the quick thinking of a security guard and a heroic moving crew.
Kehlani Rogers was last seen at her home in Avondale, Arizona, on Friday, February 20, prompting the Avondale Police Department (APD) to issue an amber alert. A 23-year-old woman, Marina Noriega, was identified as the suspect after she and the toddler were spotted together in Maricopa on Saturday.
The breakthrough came on Sunday, when a security guard at a QuikTrip gas station spotted Noriega with Kehlani and immediately contacted police. Nearby, a moving crew member with Camelback Moving overheard the call and decided to act telling news channels, “we had to do something.”
“I went in just to get my water,” Kevin Place, who works with Camelback, told FOX News. “I hear the security guard talking on the phone. I’m assuming he’s speaking to police. He says, ‘I think I see the little girl.’”
Two of his coworkers, Ralph Vollmert and Rob Hernandez, were in one of the trucks. “Kevin had come up to the driver door of the truck and was like, ‘Hey, the child’s in that truck,’” Vollmert said. “The driver of the truck—Rob—he was like, ‘What do you want to do, Kevin?’ Kevin said, ‘Let’s block ’em in.’ … So (Rob) took a bite of his food and said, ‘All right.'”
Meanwhile Place wrote down the license plate number and gave it to the security guard, who in turn relayed it to police.
After blocking Noriega’s vehicle with their trucks, Place began recording her vehicle. At one point, Noriega is seen looking out of her car at the moving vans.
It was a tense few minutes of waiting. But then officers swooped in, arrested Noriega, and secured Kehlani, who was returned safely to her family. APD confirmed in a press release that “Kehlani is in good health” and that they “do not believe that she was harmed during this ordeal.”
Noriega is not related to the family. According to a family member speaking to ABC 15 Arizona, the family had taken Noriega into his home “because she needed a helping hand.” Police reported that Noriega was found with a glass pipe and admitted to using meth the day before the alleged abduction.
She is now in the custody of Avondale Police detectives and will be booked into the Maricopa County Jail on charges related to the incident.
