Man Cares for His 89-Year-Old Neighbor So She Does Not Have To Spend Her Final Days Alone

In 2013, Chris Salvatore moved into a West Hollywood apartment and noticed his 85-year-old neighbor, Norma Cook, waving from her window. A few weeks of casual greetings led Chris to finally knock on her door.

Norma answered with a glass of champagne, her favorite drink, and invited him in to talk. That conversation changed both of their lives forever.

Over the next few years, Chris and Norma became inseparable. They cooked together, watched the news, shared her beloved peanuts and champagne, and he documented their unlikely friendship on social media with the hashtag #MyNeighborNorma.

Then Norma got sick.

At 89, her health began to decline rapidly. She was in and out of the hospital with pneumonia and complications from leukemia. When doctors finally said she could go home, there was a condition: she needed 24-hour care. Without it, they wouldn’t discharge her.

Norma had no children. No family nearby. Her Social Security check barely covered rent. The only option the system offered was a nursing facility—but Norma had lived in that apartment for 30 years. She refused to leave.

Chris saw her despair and knew he had to act.

He launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $77,000. The money paid for professional caregivers for a time, but it wasn’t sustainable. So Chris made a decision that would define both their lives.

He invited Norma and her beloved cat, Hermes, to move into his apartment.

“She couldn’t be happier that I asked. I was over there visiting most days anyway. The only other option was for her to go into a facility. I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother.”

Norma called him the grandson she never had. He called her his adopted grandmother.

For weeks, they spent their days together, watching TV, drinking champagne, talking about life. Chris became her primary caregiver, adjusting his work so he could be there for her every need.

In her final days, Norma lost her ability to walk. It crushed her spirit—she had just ordered pink hats for the next Women’s March. But she held on. She wanted one more Valentine’s Day.

She got it.

Norma Cook passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017, with Chris at her side. Her last coherent words to him were: “I love you.”

In his tribute, Chris wrote: “Perhaps Norma’s lasting legacy is that her story helped the world to see the true meaning of love. Each of us is lovable even with all of our differences. Love has no boundaries.”

Sometimes the greatest acts of kindness come from the most unexpected places, like a knock on a neighbor’s door and a glass of champagne.
