Lost Horse Trapped in Deep Mountain Snow Saved With a River Raft and Snowmobiles

Mouse the horse had been missing since July, after getting lost during a fishing trip in Wyoming with his owners. But at long last — and just in time — he has finally been found thanks to a group of snowmobilers in the Wind River Mountains.

The snowmobilers were out enjoying a day on the trails when they spotted what they first thought was a moose. Instead, it was Mouse, stranded deep in the snow.

Rescuing him, however, posed a huge challenge: how could they possibly get a horse nearly 10 miles out of the mountains? That’s when someone came up with an unusual idea — a river raft.

The group contacted local businessman Hunter Burrell and asked if they could borrow a boat. When he asked what it was for, they admitted he might not believe it… but he agreed right away, and the unlikely rescue mission moved forward.

Preston Jorgenson, Mouse’s co-owner, had nearly given up hope of ever finding him. He was overjoyed when he received the call that his horse had been found and went out to assist with the rescue.

Mouse was carefully placed into the raft, which was then pulled through the snow by snowmobiles and a snowcat, carrying him step by step back to safety.

Now back home, Preston says Mouse is doing great — eating, drinking, and happily enjoying life again.
