It Took 5 Months, But This Lab Dog Finally Gave Her New Mom A Kiss

Callie wanted a companion for her dog, Murphy, and reached out to the Beagle Freedom Project. That’s how she learned about Maggie—a dog who had spent two and a half years being used for lab testing. Poor Maggie was terrified of everything. Still, Callie was eager for the chance to show her what love felt like.

But earning Maggie’s trust would be a slow and difficult journey. Maggie was especially fearful of people with short hair—even when Callie put her own hair up, it frightened Maggie. For weeks, Maggie kept her distance, unsure and anxious.

Everything began to change when she was finally introduced to Murphy. As soon as she met him, Maggie found comfort in his presence. She still wouldn’t let Callie come near her, but she stopped running when Murphy was by her side.

It took nearly five months before Maggie allowed Callie into her space—and when she finally gave her a kiss on the hand, Callie was overjoyed. Maggie’s healing journey is far from over, but thanks to love, patience, and the friendship of another dog, she’s no longer walking it alone.
