Man Uses a Bit of Sand To Transform Dirty Sidewalks Into Colorful Art

Typical big city sidewalks are dark, dirty and gloomy, but one man is changing all of that with just a little bit of sand.

Joe Mangrum uses handfuls of colored sand to create glorious works of art and hundreds of his intricate, large-scale sand works have appeared throughout public spaces in New York City. He adapted the ancient art form to his own contemporary style and the results are bright, fantastic and sometimes, psychedelic, art.

Joe said that he is influenced by everything from carnivorous plants and undersea creatures to circuitry and fractal mathematics. He has also been influenced by traditional Buddhist mandalas and Navajo sand paintings.
