Firefighter Saved a Puppy From a House Fire — Then Adopted His Brother a Year Later

It’s a full-circle moment for two puppies saved from a house fire last year — they have now been adopted by the very same firefighter who rescued them from the blaze.

Last March, firefighters in Pickens County, Georgia, responded to a house fire and learned there was a family of dogs inside the home. They found the mother dog protecting her newborn litter, refusing to abandon them even as flames engulfed the house.

Tragically, the mother lost her life shielding her 8-day-old puppies from the fire. But her sacrifice was not in vain. She saved them long enough for firefighters to reach the litter in time.

Pickens County Fire Lieutenant John Isaac Holaway said at the time: “Me and my crew went in, they told us what room they were in, whereabout. And I was able to find them because of their mother. I just started picking up every puppy that I could, radioed to the chief that I had found them, and then I started passing the puppies out the window.”

The puppies were brought to Bosley’s Place and Pup and Cat Company to be cared for, and later adopted out when they were old enough. Eventually, all the puppies found loving homes — except for one named Kreed, whose first adoption didn’t work out through no fault of his own.

Pup and Cat Company began searching for a new home. Time ticked by, and soon it was January. That’s when Jennifer Seigel, founder of Bosley’s Place, spotted Kreed in a post online and thought he looked familiar. She called the rescue to double-check, and they confirmed it was Kreed.

That’s when Seigel had an idea.

One of Kreed’s brothers, Chief Lou, had been adopted by Lieutenant Holaway — one of the firefighters who had rescued the puppies.

“I reached out to tell him what was happening,” she said. “And he was like, oh no no no. Let’s get the boys together and see if they get along, and if they do, we’ll foster him.”

When Kreed and Chief Lou were reunited for the first time since the fire, they instantly bonded.

“From the picture that I saw of Kreed yesterday, he looked pretty sad, and now he looks real happy,” Holaway said as he watched the two dogs reconnect. “Lou’s loving it. They both seem happy, and that makes me happy.”

Their bond was so heartwarming that Holaway and his family decided to adopt Kreed permanently.

“There’s just a special connection,” Holaway said. “With these dogs, because I rescued them.”

He also brings the dogs regularly to the station, where they’ve become part of the extended family at the fire hall.

“The guys love it,” Holaway said. “It’s like therapy for them. No matter what kind of day we are having, some snuggles and love from the dog is always a plus.”

For Seigel, it’s a fairytale ending. She wrote on Facebook: “There is something incredibly full circle about this moment. The same man who ran into a burning house last March and pulled these tiny puppies out to save their lives is now Dad to two of them. Lou and Kreed are exactly where they were always meant to be. This family is extraordinary. A man with the biggest heart. An incredible wife. Two amazing dogs.”
