Belgian Malinois Protects Friend With Bucket Stuck on Head for 5 Days Until Community Saves Them Both

Sometimes, it takes an entire community—and one person who refuses to give up—to change the outcome of a story that seems destined for heartbreak.

In Winston County, Alabama, that story began with a single social media post.

Photos started circulating of a stray dog wandering alone with a bucket stuck tightly over his head. Unable to eat or drink, the dog’s situation was becoming more urgent with each passing day.

For Eric Bowman, ignoring it was never an option.

After seeing the post, he immediately went to the area where the dog had last been spotted. But the situation was more complex than it first appeared—the dog with the bucket wasn’t alone. A Belgian Malinois stayed by his side the entire time, refusing to leave him.

“Over the last week, I’ve been to that location nine times,” Eric shared. “Walking the area and enlisting a small army of concerned citizens to help look for these poor babies.”

Day after day, Eric and a growing group of volunteers searched the remote area. As time passed, hope began to waver. The dog with the bucket had gone nearly a week without food or water, and it was unclear how much longer he could survive.

“We had just about given up on this boy,” Eric admitted. “But my spirit just wouldn’t give up. My heart kept me believing he was still out there. I prayed… I cried… I just couldn’t let go.”

Then, finally, everything changed. With the help of a dedicated group of rescuers, including animal trapper Kaleb Estill and several others, the two dogs were located.

Eric carefully approached the dog with the bucket—now named Buck—from behind, a pair of snips in hand.

“I came up behind him and started cutting on the bucket,” he said. “We eased it off his head, and it was like his whole attitude changed.”

The transformation was immediate.

“As soon as that bucket came off, you could see the relief on him. He just went almost limp.”

For the first time in days, Buck could breathe freely, see clearly, and begin to rest.

Milo, the Belgian Malinois who had stayed loyally by his side, also relaxed. Initially protective and unsure of the rescuers, he seemed to understand once Buck was free that help had finally arrived.

Now safe, the two dogs are recovering together in a caring environment.

Buck is being treated for sinus and ear infections following his ordeal, while Milo is healing from an injured hip and several cuts. Throughout it all, they have remained inseparable—the same way Milo never left Buck during his most difficult moments.
