Dog Seemed Timid Until His Foster Spoke His Language and Everything Changed

In September, a small Chihuahua was found roaming around a building in Los Angeles with no microchip and no family. He was rescued by Wags and Walks Adoption Center, where Nacho was initially evaluated as shy and withdrawn. To help him build confidence, he was placed in foster care with Monica Matute. But it turned out Nacho wasn’t lacking confidence at all — he simply needed someone to speak to him in a language he could understand.

Monica noticed that the tiny dog didn’t really respond when she spoke to him. She made a breakthrough when she realized Nacho didn’t understand English, but instantly reacted when she spoke to him in Spanish. He even cried when she asked him questions in Spanish.

After that, Nacho showed a burst of energy and responsiveness. Monica revealed that he was actually a confident, loving dog — not timid and shy as the rescue originally believed. Monica wrote, “I hope his previous family is doing okay — Nacho gives me the impression he was previously loved.”

The viral video documenting his transformation earned more than 14 million views on TikTok, and people quickly fell in love with Nacho. But despite all the attention, not a single suitable adopter came forward to give the little Chihuahua a home.

More than a month later, Nacho was preparing to be transported to the Oregon Humane Society in Portland in hopes that the move would help him find a family. That’s when Nancy Garza-Harris and her husband, Rick, who live in Seattle, reached out to Monica. Nancy had been one of Nacho’s many fans and couldn’t understand why he still hadn’t found a home in California. So Nancy and Rick decided to change that.

They drove out to meet him, and the trio instantly clicked. One week later, Nacho, Nancy, and Rick are all happily settled at home together. Monica is not only grateful but thrilled that Nacho has finally found a loving family.
