A one-year-old Australian cattle dog named Poppy is being hailed as a hero after she stuck by the side of a 2-year-old girl who wandered from home. Nearly 100 volunteers and emergency workers came out to look for Sophia and Poppy after the little girl disappeared from her family’s property skirting the Australian bushland on December 22, 2015.
The girl was wearing only a t-shirt and a diaper, but her grandmother Vera Cook held onto hope that Poppy would aid rescuers and her granddaughter, and she was right!
“She only had a T-shirt and a nappy, she didn’t even have shoes on, because she was just playing around the house here and she just disappeared,” she told ABC Net. “The only thing I was thinking was well, hopefully the dog would have kept her warm, that was what my thought was.”
For almost seven hours Poppy remained by Sophia’s side. Rescue workers eventually spotted tiny footprints along with paw prints in the soil near a dam and heard Poppy barking shortly after. The family say they are forever indebted to Poppy for what she did.
