Dad Goes Viral After Mystery Donation to Front Yard Food Pantry

A Pittsburgh-area dad and his young sons’ mission to feed their community is touching millions after a now-viral video shared on social media.

AJ, a father from Whitehall, and his two sons—ages 7 and 9—came up with the idea recently, not knowing what they were about to create. With many families struggling, especially after SNAP benefits being affected, the trio decided to set up a small “front yard food pantry” to share groceries with neighbors in need.

A few Sundays ago, they put out one tote and two coolers stocked with food. By the next morning, about 70% of the food was gone. “It showed us how many people really need it,” AJ said. Hoping to reach more families, he posted about the project in local Facebook groups.

Then, something incredible happened.

When AJ checked his mailbox the following Saturday, he found an envelope stuffed with cash—thousands of dollars—from an anonymous donor. Overwhelmed, AJ filmed a short video about the surprise, saying through tears, “I’m literally shaking right now.”

His emotional post struck a chord online and went viral. His family’s generosity and the mystery donor’s kindness has inspired many more people to get involved.

AJ shared how he and his sons got the project started and then updated everyone on how things have progressed since word got out. They began with one tote and two coolers. He now has ten plus totes full of food and line-ups of people waiting to pick up items.

It’s not been without its hiccups. Two days after they initially got started one of the totes filled with food got stolen. A local news station did a story and the tote reappeared (empty). But so too did four more totes filled with food. Local police also donated gift cards and he got enough cash to buy a table.

As word spread, AJ says he’s received a steady stream of food donations, people making him signs and pitching in to help any way they can. People in other states have told AJ his kindness has inspired them to start their own pantries.

In one of his latest videos, AJ shared that Instacart is sending him food, Governor Shapiro made a TikTok about him, he’s now got pet food to help people with pets, and baby food to help people with infants. An someone dropped off a canopy to help cover the tables when the weather goes bad.

AJ is very busy with all the activity saying “it’s crazy” with all of the donations. But it’s thrilling to see all the kindness and generosity that he and his sons have inspired in their community and beyond.
