The 3D effect is created from adding white vertical lines to each frame of the animation. It’s a painstaking process, but once they’re added, anything in the frame that breaks out in front of the white lines will appear to be moving towards you.

Basically, the white lines use depth of field and “trick” our minds into thinking you are seeing things in 3D. When the viewer’s brain sees something move “in front” of the white lines (into the foreground), the brain immediately “fills in the blanks” and translates it into three dimensions.
