Cat with ‘Mystical’ Eyes is Not AI, She’s a Rescue with a Rare Condition

What looks like a mystical, AI-generated kitty is 100% real—and her story is nothing short of miraculous.

Melinoë has captured hearts across social media with her enormous, mesmerizing eyes—so unique that thousands of fans thought she might be fake. But not long ago, no one noticed her at all.

As a tiny kitten, she was thrown behind a dumpster, bleeding from cuts and battling the cold, forgotten by the world. Her sister, Cheeto, was with her, and both were in desperate need of care. That’s when rescuers from The Bitty Kitty Brigade in Little Canada, Minnesota, stepped in—and her journey to fame began.

Melinoë was soon diagnosed with ocular Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a dangerous disease that caused inflammation in her eyes, triggering glaucoma that made them swell into enormous, opalescent orbs—her signature “galactic” look.

“Her eyes weren’t enlarged when she first arrived,” said Mandy Dwyer, the rescue’s director. “But when her eyes began to swell… without treatment, FIP is almost always fatal. Our vet team tackled it immediately—and now she’s healthy and thriving.”

One eye is greenish, the other reddish, and the scars on her ears look like little half moons—perfect for her one-of-a-kind personality.

Today, Melinoë is a happy, playful kitten with limited vision but a huge personality. She went into a foster home that quickly turned into her forever home. Her adopter says:

“She’s a cuddle bug and loves exploring everything. She’s extremely gentle and loves to give kisses—even when she fully attacks my hand during playtime, she never lets me feel a single claw. She would happily spend most of the day being carried like a baby, especially if she got to chew on my fingertips.”

Her personality is just as unique as her eyes: “She doesn’t really meow—she squeaks or howls. It’s very dramatic!”

Even though Melinoë has limited vision and needs daily eyedrops, she receives top-notch medical care. The vets confirmed that her unique eyes are comfortable, and it’s safe for her to keep them. She’s surrounded by specialists who not only want her to thrive, but also aim to improve future FIP treatments to help other kitties like her.
