A New Hybrid Grue Jay Bird Discovered In Texas

What is a Grue Jay? It’s a new hybrid bird, the offspring of a Blue Jay and a Green Jay. This unique bird was recently discovered in San Antonio, Texas, and scientists are now studying it. The Grue Jay is considered an anomaly because the two bird species do not typically mate.

However, climate change has driven Green Jays further north, and scientists have long wondered whether they would be antagonistic toward Blue Jays in central Texas. It turns out at least one Green Jay was more amorous than antagonistic.

Scientists expect the Grue Jay to be an outlier—an “ugly duckling” of sorts. Its unusual appearance will likely limit mating opportunities, which means there is currently only one Grue Jay… for now.
