A Boy Came to Heart Surgery Alone—One Doctor Gave Him a Family and Found Homes for His Five Siblings

When Dr. Amy Beethe first walked into a hospital room at Children’s Nebraska, she saw a 4-year-old boy sitting completely alone, about to undergo heart surgery.

“It took me back that this 4-year-old was going to go through heart surgery, and nobody was there,” she said.

The boy, True, was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS), a severe congenital heart defect where one side of his heart is underdeveloped. Despite the challenges ahead, his playful spirit shone through. Just before surgery, Dr. Beethe thought he was asleep—but when she lowered his mask, he surprised her with a “Boo!”

After the surgery, Amy couldn’t stop thinking about him and made a decision.

She and her husband Ryan who were already foster parents, went to meet True in the hospital, and it didn’t take long before they knew he belonged in their family. Within weeks, True was living with the Beethes and eventually became their officially adopted son.

“He’s truly become my son,” Amy said. “When it comes to his health, I’m a mama bear, and I fight hard.”

True’s story didn’t end there. He had five siblings, all living in challenging circumstances. The Beethes and their extended family made sure each sibling found a loving home. Amy and Ryan adopted one of True’s sisters themselves, while other siblings were welcomed by relatives or trusted colleagues.

“We found a home for everyone,” Amy said. “It’s like one big extended family.”

Now, True thrives in a caring, supportive home. He loves playing basketball and kickball with his siblings, slowing down only when he needs to catch his breath. His doctors say his courage and resilience inspire everyone around him.

Through it all, True’s outlook remains simple and powerful: “Just keep going and don’t stop.”

Thanks to one doctor who refused to walk away, True—and all of his siblings—now have the love, care, and stability every child deserves.
