Dolphins In Savannah Do Something No Other Dolphins On Earth Do

Along the tidal marshes of southern Georgia, dolphins do something absolutely amazing. The dolphins hunt in a way seen nowhere else on Earth.

As the tide recedes and the water becomes just inches deep, they move into position. Then, in a remarkable display, the dolphins surge out of the water and onto the muddy banks—momentarily fishing on land.

Working together, they form a living net, circling schools of fish and moving in perfect unison to push them toward shore. Riding the wave they create, the dolphins lunge forward to snatch their catch. It’s a risky strategy, as they can become stranded in the mud—but it’s a risk they’re willing to take.

Nearby, egrets and seagulls stand ready, watching for their chance to swoop in and grab any fish left behind.
