Couple Changes Their Hiking Route Last Minute — Finds a Lost Dog in Need of Help
Sometimes, the right people show up at exactly the right moment. And sometimes they pick a different trail.
Matt and Grace were out on a hike in Bella Vista, Arkansas, with their baby and their two dogs when they spotted something unusual on the dried out creek bed of the trail – a lone dog, wandering all by herself.
Curious and concerned, Matt went ahead to check. The pup immediately trotted over, tail wagging, happy to see a friendly face. She was calm, gentle, and seemed to know that help had arrived. Without a fuss, Matt scooped her up, carried her up the embankment and brought her back to the family.
“We had plans to do a different trail today, but something came up, so we decided to do this one ultimately—and now we know why,” the couple later wrote on TikTok.
@theggoldenroad If you’re missing a sweet girl in Bella Vista, Arkansas the animal shelter currently has her!! (March 20) they are a NO kill shelter We had plans to do a different trail today but something came up so we decided to do this one ultimately and now we know why! We’ve been in a lot of situations like this and they are hardly ever easy at the end. We just hope they can help her be comfortable or she’s reunited with her owner #lostdog #bellavista #arkansas #nwa #bentonville ♬ original sound – Matt & Grace
The group found a shady spot in a nearby park to pause and figure out their next steps. The dog, who appeared to be a senior, was sweet and agreeable, as if she had been patiently waiting for a kind family to find her.
Meanwhile, Matt and Grace’s own dogs, Foxi and Nemo, settled in beside her, keeping her company as if welcoming her into the pack. Matt and Grace had rescued dogs before, so Foxi and Nemo were on their best behavior.
Grace reached out to Bella Vista Animal Shelter, and soon, Lola—the pup’s real name—was safely taken into their care. The family said their goodbyes and kept their fingers crossed that she would be reunited with her owners.
And then came the happy news. The shelter’s Facebook post caught the attention of Lola’s mom. Lola had slipped away during an evening walk a few days earlier, and her family had been searching desperately ever since.
Thanks to Matt and Grace’s kindness and quick thinking, Lola was safely back home where she belonged.
It’s a story that could have ended so differently—especially if they had stuck to their planned route – but sometimes, the path takes the right humans to the right place at the right time to make everything turn out okay.
