Man’s Newly Adopted Kitten Saves His Life From House Fire
A Portland man is alive today because of a tiny, fearless hero named Fred.
Donald VanWormer had only adopted the 9-week-old kitten a few weeks earlier—but in that short time, Fred proved just how powerful the bond between a person and a pet can be.
VanWormer was fast asleep when a fast-moving fire tore through his home, and it was Fred who acted first.
“Fred jumped on my face and started hitting me with his paws,” VanWormer told the Post. “He was going crazy. He woke me up, then I smelled the smoke and realized what was happening.”
Flames were already spreading rapidly, climbing into the attic and pouring through the home. With Fred in his arms, VanWormer tried to escape—but thick smoke and a fallen dresser blocked his way.
Then the ceiling began to collapse.
“I made it to the living room just as the ceiling started caving in. I was stumbling but finally got out the door,” he said.
During the frightening chaos, VanWormer suffered burns to his chest and face, but he made it outside alive. Then he realized something devastating—Fred wasn’t with him.
Desperate, he tried to go back inside to find his kitten, but he fell, hit his head and lost consciousness. “When I came to, I tried to get back inside to find him, but the firefighters stopped me,” VanWormer said. “I was begging them to help me find him.”
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters made a heartbreaking discovery. Fred was found near the doorway. “He almost made it out,” VanWormer said.
Through the grief, one truth remains clear to him. VanWormer believes he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Fred. He said, “Fred died saving me.”
He had once joked when adopting the kitten, “This is my lucky cat.” But he had imagined years—maybe decades—together.
Instead, Fred gave him the greatest gift.
Sometimes the smallest companions leave the biggest impact. In just a few short weeks, Fred didn’t just find a home—he saved a life.
