‘They’re Heroes’: Good Samaritans and Police Rescue Baby From Overturned Car
After a vehicle flipped over during a crash in Fort Worth, Texas, officers and bystanders raced to help a woman and her 1-year-old daughter trapped beneath it.
Fort Worth Police Officers Sgt. Nichols and Officer Bounds responded to the scene after reports that the mother and her baby had been ejected from a Hyundai Veloster. The Fort Worth Police Department released body camera footage of the harrowing rescue, showing the officers running to the car where Good Samaritans were trying to locate the toddler.
Seconds later, one officer said, “Hey, we need to move the car. I think the baby’s under there.” The group of bystanders helped the officers lift the vehicle so the officer could pull the youngster to safety.
The child was unconscious and not breathing, so Sgt. Nichols immediately began CPR while Officer Bounds cleared the baby’s airway. Moments later, the baby made a faint sound, much to the officers’ relief. Paramedics arrived soon after, and police reported that both the child and mother are in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
The Fort Worth Police Department noted, “We are beyond proud of the life-saving actions performed by Sgt. Nichols and Officer Bounds for their bravery and quick response to this terrible scene. We are also grateful to the Fort Worth citizens who saw someone in danger and, without hesitation, assisted our officers.”
