Dog Sinks to Bottom of Pool — Pool Cleaner Arrives With Only a Minute to Spare

Swimming pool attendant Vinicius Orlando usually provides cleaning and maintenance for families in Goiás, Brazil. But recently, he ended up providing life-saving care to a small dog named Choquito.

When Orlando arrived at the family’s home, he wasn’t greeted at the door by Choquito as usual. he suspecting something was wrong and heard noises coming from the pool. He immediately thought the dog had somehow gotten into the fenced pool. And when he saw the pool cover was wet he rushed to pull it off. Horrified, he saw Chocito lifeless at the bottom.

Orlando immediately jumped in and lifted the little dog out of the water.

Choquito was unconscious, so Orlando began CPR, massaging his chest in an effort to resuscitate him. After a tense few seconds, Choquito began to respond. Orlando called the family right away to tell them what had happened. The father, who was picking up his daughter from school, raced home. Together, they rushed Choquito to the vet, who almost couldn’t believe the dog had been so close to death — especially since within just 30 minutes, the one-eyed dog was completely back to his old self.

Later, the family reviewed security footage and discovered how it happened. Choquito had squeezed through a narrow gap in the pool gate. He fell in and struggled to stay afloat for 40 minutes before finally sinking. Incredibly, Orlando arrived just one minute after Choquito went under.

Orlando later reflected on two coincidences that made the miracle rescue possible. He told Record Goiás that his co-worker had decided to stop by the pool earlier than usual so they could go to lunch, and he had recently taken a roofing safety course where he learned CPR techniques.

Now fully recovered, Choquito is back to being his mischievous self. As for Orlando, he’s grateful he was in the right place at the right time.
