Quick-Thinking 7-Eleven Worker Spots Woman’s Hand Signal for Help
An observant store clerk helped a woman escape a suspected domestic violence incident after recognizing a secret hand signal for distress. The tense encounter unfolded at a 7-Eleven in Alhambra, California recently. The heroic employee noticed the woman’s silent plea for help and immediately called 911.
Alhambra police quickly responded, questioning both the woman and the man she was with. Police later wrote on social media: “During further investigation, it was determined that a domestic violence incident had occurred, and the victim was asking for help using hand signals behind her back. Someone recognized what she was doing and called us to respond.”
But the situation escalated. When officers escorted the suspect outside for further questioning, he suddenly tried to run. “When asked to stand up, the suspect attempted to flee but didn’t even make it out of the parking lot.” He was arrested on the spot and booked at APD jail. Authorities also discovered he was carrying a stun gun and had an active warrant.
Police later released bodycam footage of the incident, commending the clerk’s vigilance. Domestic violence advocates also say the case underscores the importance of knowing the hand signal for distress—a simple gesture that could save someone’s life.
