Growing up, twins Mary and Ruth looked identical until they were around 11 years old. After that Mary started to put on weight. A lot of weight. By the time the sisters appeared on the Oprah Show back in 2005, Mary was 300 pounds heavier than her sister.
While Mary said she always felt like “the fat twin,” and Ruth was the “pretty one”, Ruth also suffered her own weight issues. She battled anorexia and bulimia because she was terrified she would gain weight like Mary.
It was during that initial interview that Mary’s 13-year-old son, Chris, shared his fear was that he would lose his mom, that she would die because of her eating problem. It wasn’t until 6 years later that Mary was shocked into action by a tragic life event.
Oprah caught up with the sisters and found out the emotional reason Mary was taking control of her life. It’s sad and emotional and a lesson for us all to never take life for granted.
