Woman Dying of Cancer Asks Rescue To Find Her Dog A New Home

On any given day Stray Rescue of St. Louis gets any number of heartbreaking cases. This week they received a heartbreaking letter – a dog owner’s dying plea for Stray Rescue to take her dog and find her a loving home.

Stray Rescue shared the letter on Facebook along with a photo of the dog, Shell.

In the letter, the woman reveals that her own mother adopted Shell from Stray Rescue around 8 years ago. When her mother suffered a stroke and developed Alzheimer’s, Shell came to live with the woman. However, she became ill herself.

She wrote:

“Dear Stray Rescue,

“I am writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell…I’ve been fighting cancer for a few months and if you’re reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be taken care of in a home…In these days all I do is worry about what’s going to happen to her. I love this girl, she is my daughter.”

Stray Rescue could never refuse such a request and explained, “Shell is now with us, safe and sound in our Executive Director, Cassady’s office. She is scared, but we will shower her with so much love.”

They are asking potential adopters to contact them, writing, “If someone has been lonely and would like to give Shell a home, with plenty of patience and understanding, please fill out an application.

News Update: Oct 5, 2018

There is a silver lining to the sad story we shared of Shell, the dog dropped off at Stray Rescue of St. Louis. News outlets have said that Shell’s original owner committed suicide. Crystal Chrisp, 46, was found dead in her apartment after learning her breast cancer had returned. Before taking her own life, Chrisp made sure her dog, Shell, was taken care of.

Stray Rescue announced that they have found a home for Shell.

“We have a happy ending to Shell’s #tragic story. As most of you know, we received a #heartbreaking #letter on Monday. Shell came to Stray Rescue after her owner passed away,” wrote Stray Rescue. “Then, a wonderful lady saw the news segment and knew it was time for her to adopt after losing her Stray Rescue dog Trenton, in July. She just felt so drawn to her. Wasting no time, she filled out an application and was here the very next #morning. The two of them hit it off and she knew it was definitely the right time. She says #Shell is already running the house, and that they are inseparable. We are honored to have fulfilled the final wish of her Mom, who is no longer with us. We promise she will be spoiled for the rest of her #life.”
