Goldfish Bullied Because Of A Tumor Gets Life-Saving Brain Surgery

A goldfish named George underwent life-saving brain surgery after developing a tumor which prevented him from eating or swimming properly. He was also being bullied by the other fish because of his sickness. Rather than put him down, his owner Pip Joyce opted for the operation to remove the tumor.

Before vets could operate, the 10-year-old fish was sedated in a bucket of water laced with anaesthetic. He was doused with anaesthetic and oxygenated water throughout the 45 minute operation.

Vet Dr Tristan Rich, of Lort Smith Animal Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, said, “It’s a very fiddly procedure and you have to be very careful about blood loss.”

After the tricky surgery, George was placed in the recovery unit and given oxygen. He was given injections with long acting pain relief and antibiotics. Soon afterwards he took a couple of breaths on his own and started swimming around.

Pip Joyce told Australia’s 7 News he was delighted that the operation on George (believed to have cost several hundred dollars) was successful.

“We love George. He’s been great company and we’ve had some good laughs out of him.”

Dr. Rich said if George stays healthy, he is expected to live for another 20 years!

George’s owner said he considers George a pet and family member just like any other. What an amazing doctor! Share this story with your animal-loving friends.
