Architect Turns Old Cement Factory Into Stunning Home

When Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill came across an abandoned cement factory in 1973, he was inspired to transform the crumbling structure into a livable space. Now, 45 years later, La fábrica (The Cement Factory) has become an amazing modern home and work space with incredible gardens as well.

Bofill purchased the property, which was a WWI-era cement factory located near Barcelona.

Whereas others saw an ugly industrial building, he saw something with incredible potential.

The enormous silos, smoke stack and underground tunnels were all in good shape.

It took more than a year and a half to deconstruct the building so that it could be rebuilt into a livable space.

They planted vegetation extensively around the exteriors so that the plants would hang from roofs and walls.

The studio for Bofill’s architectural team are in the factory silos over four floors.

The workspace is bright, spacious and with plenty of natural light that looks into the gardens.

The factory hall was transformed into a conference and exhibition room.

The gardens have numerous eucalyptus, palms, olive trees among others.

There are many beautiful places to relax and explore.

The home residence has many beautiful living spaces.

A kitchen-dining room has two warm fireplaces where the family can gather.

A living room with beautiful open bay windows and long, white drapes.

And a romantic bedroom.

Even though Bofill has lived in the space for decades, it is still a work in progress.

“Presently I live and work here better than anywhere else. It is for me the only place where I can concentrate and associate ideas in the most abstract manner,” Bofiff writes of the Cement Factory on his website.

“The Cement Factory is a place of work par excellence. Life goes on here in a continuous sequence, with very little difference between work and leisure.”
