Rare Twin Foals Survive Thanks To Heroic Efforts Of Hospital Staff

The staff at an animal teaching hospital at the University of Minnesota St. Paul bore witness to an amazing birth when a mare named Princess gave birth to twins!

It happens extremely rarely, and when it does, the foals rarely survive. Fewer than one percent of births are successful because the babies tend to be born with terrible medical conditions.

The newborn foals named William and Henry were no exception and the staff were afraid the babies would not survive the night.

The medical staff put in a heroic effort. They were with the horses every minute for weeks on end, helping the foals to stand and nurse and give them the emergency care they needed in order to survive. And they pulled through!

After three weeks of medical care and rehabilitation, the two horses were ready to go home. A year later, the two horses were still healthy and happy!
