Extremely Rare Rhino Just Gave Birth To A Baby, The Second In 128 Years

It’s a girl! A critically endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros gave birth to a 45-pound calf. The mom named, Ratu, is 14-years-old and lives at a sanctuary in Indonesia.

This baby is only the second born Sumatran rhino in the country in nearly 130 years. Ratu is a very good mother and moments after giving birth was tending to her baby.

The Sumatran rhino is seriously threatened by human poachers; as a result there are less 100 left in the world.

Each birth, especially this one, gives hope for the future of continued growth and survival of the species.

“We are overjoyed that Ratu delivered a healthy calf and are cautiously optimistic that the calf will continue to thrive,” Susie Ellis, executive director of International Rhino Foundation, said in a statement. “She’s absolutely adorable, and we haven’t stopped smiling since the moment we were sure she was alive and healthy. While one birth does not save the species, it’s one more Sumatran rhino on Earth.”

Here’s the video of the actual birth!
