Family Says Son’s Light-Up Sneakers Caused Car Fire

Many parents know that lithium button batteries pose a danger to toddlers, but the Virag family in Katy, Texas is warning parents about a new potential danger from the batteries that may have caused a fire in their car.

It appears their son’s light-shoes may have sparked a fire inside their SUV because of the lithium batteries in the shoes.

The Virag family bought a pair of Jake and the Neverland Pirates light-up shoes for their 2-year-old son at Payless. Shortly after, they noticed the windows of their SUV begin to blacken. When they opened the door they smelled burnt plastic and discovered the passenger seat of the car had melted. After putting out the fire, they found one of their son’s shoes charred and half burnt.

Although the fire marshall has yet to rule on the cause, the Virags believe the lithium battery inside their son’s sneaker likely shorted, causing the battery to overheat.

Payless has pulled the shoes from their shelves while they investigate the Virag’s concerns and work with authorities to better understand what may have caused the car fire.

As for the Virags, they are relieved their son wasn’t wearing the shoes when the battery overheated and plan to avoid that type of shoe in the future.
