Ellen Gives Couple Who Sacrificed Their Savings To Save Dog A Surprise Gift

Jennifer and Jim are animal lovers who rescue and foster dogs and are willing to move heaven and earth to take care of them. When Jennifer and Jim brought Pearl home, the Pit Bull had been through a lot. But the couple soon fell in love with her and became foster failures. They thought Pearl’s troubles were behind her, but shortly after adopting her, she began rapidly losing weight.

After many visits to the veterinarian, the doctors determined that she suffered from a pancreatic illness called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. EPI causes a lack of digestive enzymes in the body that can lead to issues like weight loss and malnutrition.

The medical bills mounted up (to nearly $16,000) but Jim and Jennifer refused to give up on Pearl.

“We had decided from the very beginning that as long as she was not in pain and she was going to continue to fight, that we would fight for her,” Jim told Ellen DeGeneres, when he appeared recently on her show.

Jennifer added, “Our dogs are our babies, so it was never any big decision.”

To help with their financial setbacks, Jennifer’s second-grade class decided to pitch in and they set up a lemonade stand. It was a gesture that caught Ellen’s attention.

“So they put up a lemonade stand and raised $120,” Ellen explained on the segment. “That’s a lot of lemonade. So good for them!”

Being Ellen, the talk show host also decided to pitch in and help the kind-hearted couple.
