Dogs Honored And Thanked For Their Friendship At Special Festival

There is a very special festival that celebrates people’s love of dogs which is held every year in Nepal as part of Diwali, a five-day festival of lights that celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Diwali is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. In Nepal, the second day celebration is called Kukur Tihar and it is devoted to honoring and worshipping dogs.

Garlands of flowers, called malla, are given to all the dogs, strays and pets, as a mark of respect.

The dogs are also colored with red tika, which gives the dog a touch of sacredness and acts as a blessing to those that encounter the dog.

All the dogs are also offered delicious food.

The whole purpose of the festival is to cherish the relationship between humans and dogs.

It pays respect to the many roles dogs play in people’s lives whether that role be as a guardian, companion or family member.

Some dog lovers after learning about the Kukur Tihar decided to adorn their own dogs with garlands and mallas.
